How wholesale platforms handle order cutoffs

An order cutoff is not one setting. Across fourteen wholesale platforms it breaks into six that vary independently - the clock time and the day it counts back from, whether each delivery day carries its own deadline or one rule covers all of them, whether a late order is blocked, warned or moved to the next delivery date without comment, who writes the message the buyer reads, whether the deadline can differ per customer, and whether a reminder goes out beforehand. Most platforms build a subset, two enforce no deadline at all, and one puts the setting behind a higher tier. How to stop wholesale customers ordering after the cutoff covers choosing your own.

The deadline is a clock time plus a relative day, not a timestamp

No platform asks for a single moment. The deadline is a time of day paired with how many days before the delivery it falls, which is what lets one setting govern a repeating week.

Fresho
How the deadline is expressed
A 24-hour clock time and a relative day from drop-downs - 22:00 and "previous day" means order by 10pm for next-day delivery
Local Line
How the deadline is expressed
Two fields on a fulfilment schedule, Days before and Cutoff time, read in the merchant's timezone
Upstock
How the deadline is expressed
A clock time per fulfilment group, defaulting to one day before the delivery day and settable earlier or later
Choco
How the deadline is expressed
A clock time after which the following day closes
Wholesale Handler
How the deadline is expressed
A signed offset in minutes before the start of the delivery day, so a negative value opens same-day ordering

Two platforms break the pattern in opposite directions. Orderlion attaches cutoff times to products rather than to days, so a long-lead line closes earlier than the rest of the catalogue. Orderspace carries no clock time anywhere: its only deadline is an optional date on a preorder window, after which preordering stops for that season.

Shopify's native B2B features enforce no ordering deadline. The business-day cutoff is fixed at 12pm in the shipping origin's timezone and decides only whether the current day counts toward fulfilment time, and a separate field governs same-day delivery shipping. A wholesale buyer can still complete an order at 4pm against a 2pm policy; the lead time starts the next day instead.

Six platforms hold a separate deadline for each delivery day

A Saturday run leaving the bakery at 4am and a Thursday run leaving at 10am cannot share a deadline, so the question is whether the platform models one deadline per weekday or one for the business.

Choco, Fresho, Local Line, Open Pantry, Upstock and Wholesale Handler all do it per delivery day. Choco shows the buyer the cutoff for each delivery day in a list they open themselves. Fresho holds them on a delivery profile, with checkboxes for the days offered. Upstock holds one cutoff per fulfilment group that applies to each delivery day in it. In Wholesale Handler the deadline is a notNull column on the delivery-day row, so an accepted delivery day cannot exist without one - there is no state in which a day is open and its deadline unset. How delivery settings work on Wholesale Handler covers the delivery days those deadlines hang from.

Shopify B2B has no per-weekday cutoff, and Orderspace has no recurring deadline to vary.

A late order is blocked, warned or rescheduled

This is the widest divergence in the field, and a feature page listing "order cutoff times" says nothing about which of the three a merchant is buying.

Choco
What a late buyer meets
The merchant's choice: strict blocks the following day outright, flexible accepts the order with a warning that the delivery date may not be met
FlexiBake
What a late buyer meets
The Next button greys out on the past-cutoff delivery date and the merchant's own cutoff message shows instead
Upstock
What a late buyer meets
The delivery day is not selectable, and the buyer leaves a note in the comments field for the supplier to read
Open Pantry
What a late buyer meets
Ordering closes on that date, and a late order arriving by phone, text or email is read into a draft against the correct cutoff
Cut+Dry
What a late buyer meets
The order is accepted, marked Overdue, and its delivery date moves to the next available one
Shopify B2B
What a late buyer meets
The order completes and the lead time starts the following day
Wholesale Handler
What a late buyer meets
The date is blocked with a named reason - cutoff_passed, rather than a generic unavailable - plus the merchant's own line of text

Choco is the only platform of the fourteen that makes strict against flexible a merchant setting rather than a product decision. Cut+Dry is the only one that reschedules without saying so, which fits a distributor running daily deliveries and misleads a producer with one weekly run.

FlexiBake and Wholesale Handler hand the merchant the message box

A blocked date needs copy, and on most platforms that copy is the vendor's. FlexiBake and Wholesale Handler give the merchant the text field instead, which is what lets a bakery say to ring the shop before 6am rather than leaving the buyer at a closed notice. FlexiBake carries a second switch that hides cutoff times from the buyer entirely. Choco's flexible warning is the platform's wording, not the merchant's.

Per-customer cutoffs run through a group, not the customer record

Five platforms let the deadline differ by customer, and four reach it by putting customers into a named bundle rather than a field on each account: Fresho's delivery profiles, Upstock's fulfilment groups, Local Line's fulfilment plans and Wholesale Handler's order profiles, which cap at 20. Open Pantry is the exception, documenting a cutoff set per customer directly as well as per delivery day. Orderlion lists per-customer delivery settings, days and fees included, on its Professional tier. How order profiles work on Wholesale Handler covers what else travels in that bundle.

One customer on a different deadline therefore needs a group of one on all but Open Pantry.

A cutoff reminder is a separate feature from the cutoff

Four platforms nudge the buyer before the deadline, and the configurability varies more than the channel does.

  • Cut+Dry sends email, text or both, as a global default that any individual customer location overrides. A buyer-side administrator adds their own recipients per order guide, and a setting the buyer changes takes priority over the distributor's.
  • Local Line sends a fulfilment cutoff notice 24 hours before the deadline, as a single toggle under the storefront's automated email notifications. The 24 hours is not adjustable.
  • Ordermentum reminds buyers by text, email or push notification.
  • Orderlion puts order reminders and push notifications on the same Professional tier as the cutoffs themselves.

Wholesale Handler sends no reminder before an ordinary order's deadline. A buyer with no standing order gets no nudge.

Four platforms generate a standing order early so the buyer can amend it

A recurring order that materialises at the moment it is placed leaves the buyer nothing to edit, so platforms that let a customer adjust a repeat order generate it ahead of the delivery date.

Local Line closes the subscription draft a set number of lead days before the fulfilment date and shows the buyer a banner naming that date in their cart. CyBake lets wholesale customers manage their own standing orders and make one-off amendments from the portal. Upstock and BakeSmart generate the order a configurable number of days ahead of the required date for the same reason.

Wholesale Handler writes the order at the deadline itself, and no order exists before then. The buyer gets a preview email three days ahead carrying a skip link that works without signing in, and can change the schedule at any time - but a schedule change applies to every future delivery, so adjusting one week's quantities is not available. Skipping that week is.

Orderlion is the only platform gating the cutoff itself behind a higher tier

Orderlion
Where the cutoff lives
The Professional tier, alongside per-customer delivery settings and order reminders. No figure and no currency is published against any of its three tiers
FlexiBake
Where the cutoff lives
The Online Ordering Portal, listed inside the Base package at US$295 a month, with additional users charged separately
Local Line
Where the cutoff lives
The cutoff and its reminder are on every plan; subscription cutoffs follow subscriptions onto Premium
Wholesale Handler
Where the cutoff lives
Every plan, including the free one, which caps at three customers

Wholesale Handler's plans differ only in how many customers they hold, so a merchant on the free plan configures the same per-day deadlines, lock modes and cutoff message as one on Pro at US$109 a month.

What Wholesale Handler's cutoffs do not do

  • No reminder is sent before an ordinary order's deadline.
  • A cutoff change takes effect immediately, so a new deadline cannot be dated to start on the day it was announced for. It is on the roadmap.
  • A standing order's quantities cannot be adjusted for one delivery only.
